How I Started by Photography Company

May 3, 2010 by biotechbillboard.com

I’ve been working at a 9 to 5 managerial job for the past 4 years and before that I was in the biotech industry for 8 years prior to that. I got laid off from my biotech job and then I found a job at another company thats not anywhere related to biotech. I found out that this is where I don’t want to be. Behind a desk. So I was looking for ways to get out of the job I am in now so that I can find a way to best pursue my hobby as a full time job.

Well I first started by buying a camera and then started to develop some skills with it. I took some course at a local community college and thats when I really started liking photography in way that might be a money making venture for me. So I started browsing forums in order to learn as much as I can in order to further my skill so that I can comfortable do photography work well enough to get paid for it. So over the years I got pretty good and then an opportunity came up to photography a wedding for a friend of mine who had a very small budget and couldn’t afford a wedding photographer. So she asked me if I could photograph her wedding knowing full well i’m not a professional photographer. Long story short, the pictures came out pretty well. My friend loved the photos. Sure they didn’t look uber professional but for the budget she paid me, which was nothing, it was a steal. So this got me thinking into researching more about wedding photography as a business.

In my research for wedding photography, I see there is a lot of competition out there. So I went to some websites that had forums dealing with wedding photography. This site had a lot of people giving feedback to people who post their wedding pictures. There were a lot of beginners that posted their stuff and it did look amateurish. However, I think I have some skill that was better than that. One thing that did worry me though as when I was browsing though, I saw a blurb about somebody saying you need insurance and liability protection. I was thinking, why would I need liability protection. I mean I only have a camera, but then people said that people sue for everything, especially if people trip over your equipment. So I searched for sites regarding liability protection and came across some sites regarding forming a LLC or Corporation.  I found Incorporate Fast and Legal Zoom on the web to do all my filing needs.  I decided to go with Incorporate Fast to form a LLC.

So, long story short, again. I formed my LLC and formed a website and I started my business with a friend of mine who was also interested in photography. Our website needs work but hopefully it’ll be improved over time. Well thats it.
